If you already think climate change is a major threat, a projection of 11°F warming by 2100 might seem more reasonable than a 1°F estimate. You can begin by understanding the complex mix of factors that make us hold onto our beliefs in the first place.When someone believes something strongly, they're not just weighing factual accuracy. They're actually doing a sophisticated calculation of different types of value, even if they don't realize it. These values come in four flavors. First, there's the practical benefit of being right - like making money by correctly predicting the stock market. Second, there's the social benefit of holding certain beliefs - like fitting in with your community by sharing their views. Third, there's how good or bad you'll feel if your belief turns out right or wrong. Fourth, there's the simple comfort or discomfort of holding the belief itself, regardless of whether it's true. For example, when scientists studied how people update their beliefs about things like health risks or personal abilities, they found people readily accepted information that made them feel good while resisting information that threatened their comfort. Even highly educated individuals showed this pattern.Plus, the environment you're in can dramatically shift how you weigh these different values. During the global pandemic, for instance, people became much more willing to accept unpleasant information about health risks. Why? Because in that threatening environment, the practical value of accurate beliefs about safety suddenly outweighed the comfort of optimistic beliefs.And then there's the role of confidence and uncertainty. People with better "metacognitive ability" - meaning they're good at knowing when they should be confident and when they shouldn't - tend to be more open to changing their beliefs when appropriate. They're better at recognizing when they need to gather more information or reconsider their position.Now, the main thing: how do we approach disagreements about beliefs. Simply bombarding someone with facts often fails because it only addresses one dimension of belief value - accuracy. That's why successful belief change often requires addressing multiple dimensions simultaneously. A practical demonstration of this is how some vaccine promotion campaigns, for instance, have found success by highlighting not just vaccine efficacy data, but also how being protected reduces anxiety and increases social respect. They're working with multiple dimensions of belief value rather than against them. Another thing that can help is "surprising validators" - respected figures who unexpectedly endorse a new belief - can be particularly effective...
Algorithmic Decision-Making
Would you trust an algorithm to make your choices? We're guessing no. One clear reason is that humans like to maintain personal control. Many actively choose to be decision-makers because they value being in charge of their choices, even when they know an algorithm might give better results.
This resistance shifts in specific situations and that's why in spite of the human tendency to take charge, algorithmic decision-making is becoming an increasingly popular second-order strategy. For example, when facing technical challenges or feeling overwhelmed by stress and multiple responsibilities, people become more open to algorithmic help. The complexity or difficulty of the task makes them more willing to delegate decisions.
Fun fact, we're more judgmental towards algorithms. We readily forgive human errors with thoughts like "nobody's perfect." But when algorithms make mistakes, people lose confidence in them entirely. This happens even when the algorithms perform better overall than humans do. After seeing an algorithm make just one error, people prefer to make their own decisions instead - even knowing they'll likely make more mistakes themselves.
This trust barrier can be overcome through understanding. People become significantly more accepting of algorithmic decisions when they grasp how the algorithms work. For instance, people trust joke recommendations more when they learn that algorithms analyze patterns in what different people find funny. The same principle applies across various domains - clear explanations of the process increase algorithm acceptance.
Interestingly, in certain other situations, people actually prefer algorithmic judgment over human judgment. For tasks like estimating people's weight from photos or predicting song rankings, people were more likely to trust algorithmic assessments. They similarly favored algorithms for predicting probabilities of specific business and political events.
But there's a crucial factor in whether people trust algorithms or humans more: the perceived expertise of the human alternative. When comparing algorithms to designated experts or physicians, people tend to favor the human. When comparing to random individuals, they prefer the algorithm. This suggests people make rational judgments about comparative expertise.

Cass R. Sunstein is currently the Robert Walmsley University Professor at Harvard. He is the founder and director of the Program on Behavioral Economics and Public Policy at Harvard Law School. In 2018, he received the Holberg Prize from the government of Norway, sometimes described as the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for law and the humanities. In 2020, the World Health Organization appointed him as Chair of its technical advisory group on Behavioural Insights and Sciences for Health. From 2009 to 2012, he was Administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, and after that, he served on the President’s Review Board on Intelligence and Communications Technologies and on the Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Board. Mr. Sunstein has testified before congressional committees on many subjects, and he has advised officials at the United Nations, the European Commission, the World Bank, and many nations on issues of law and public policy. He has served as an adviser to the Behavioural Insights Team in the United Kingdom.
