Royals – the embodiment of extravagance, adorning crowns studded with never-seen-before-mammoth-diamonds and pigeon-egg sized emeralds, reigning from their majestic thrones, drowning in expensive regalia, and chauffeured around in luxury cars. That’s the world of the Royals. And then, there’s the British Royal Family. Even among the royals, they have a knack for splashing colors of drama, gossip and scandals on the otherwise heavily guarded gates of Buckingham Palace.
Between all the hush-hush, a young “Spare” walks out these gates and shares stories from within these walls – some astonishing, never heard before; some confirming the rumors; and the rest just explaining and justifying his actions. Love the royal family, hate them , or be neutral, but the memoir “Spare” by Prince Harry is going to reveal a new side to the stories. From the death of Princess Diana, to the rivalry between Meghan and Kate, to the love / hate relationship between Princes William and Harry – scandals that you couldn’t miss even if you were a caveman. His stepping down from royal duties and leaving the country. Betrayal or an effort to escape from royal life? Prepare for candid revelations on all this, and much more as we dive into the mystery behind “Spare”!
Let’s get started.
The ‘extra’-ordinary life of a royal
Something that presumably started off as an alleged joke by Prince Charles, now the current Monarch, upon the birth of Harry turned into a constant echo in Harry’s life – an heir and a spare. That’s an aristocratic saying that an heir and a spare were needed to ensure the inheritance remained in the family, should the heir die. Harry being a spare to the heir, William or Willy as Harry would ‘lovingly’ call him, might seem harsh to us peasants, but was totally normal for Harry. Well, at least as normal as it can get for royalty. In the age of paparazzi, a “normal” life for a royal seems far-fetched. Naturally, Harry couldn't help feeling like his life was just plain weird. From the halls of his school to outside of the pub, bodyguards were his constant companion. Ironically, he was never alone yet lonely, especially during his initial years of growing up. When he yearned for normalcy, he escaped through his avatar – a regular Brit! This regular Brit wore a long loose coat paired with a baseball cap, rushing in and out of the supermarket the layout of which was imprinted in the ridges and grooves of his brain. Y’know, just in case he needed to sneak out. That’s what it took to enjoy a few hours of normalcy. However, what comes as the biggest surprise was his life within the walls of the palace. It was worse. As a child the relationship with his father was estranged. No hugs, no face-to-face compliments – a trait which probably runs in the royal family. Not saying everything was dark, though. There was light for the “darling boy” – a name the then Prince Charles called him with love. You see, Charles did make efforts to bond with Harry, though in an awkward royal way. Harry recalls yelling "Going to bed, Pa!" and Charles would dutifully come sit on his bed, tenderly tickling Harry's face until he fell asleep, leaving the door cracked to ease his fear of the dark. Cheesy or not, ironical or not, Harry found his short-lived light in the dark. Remember the aristocratic saying? Well, it agreed with Harry. He understood his role as a spare and the rules that surround the safety of first and second in line to the throne, him being the third one after his father, and older brother. Him being the...
The grief of Diana's death
The nursery, one of the castle’s fifty bedrooms, was divided unequally into two. Willy occupied the larger half with a double bed and a splendid view. The spare was spared a modest portion. It was in this bedroom that he received the news of his mother’s death. It was an early morning of August 31, 1997. Harry was twelve. His Pa, as Harry would call Charles, stood at the edge of the bed, looked down and said, “ Darling boy, Mummy’s been in a car crash.” He went on, “They tried, darling boy. I’m afraid she didn’t make it.” Harry didn’t remember saying anything. He didn’t cry, for sure. Pa didn’t hug him, just put a hand on the boy's knee to assure that everything was going to be okay. It was fatherly. It was kind. It was hopeful. But was it true? Was everything going to be okay?In the funeral that followed, the boy had to march behind her coffin in a funeral procession while the world watched. He shook hands and exchanged pleasantries with the many mourners who had probably never even met the woman . Their hands were often wet with their own tears. He himself only cried when Diana’s coffin descended, and then felt “ashamed of violating the family ethos.” Then he found himself unable to cry over her again until he was an adult in his thirties. Therapy healed him. During a session, he came with a bottle of his mother's favorite perfume, opened the lid, took in the smell, reminded himself of the kind, beloved person his mother was and cried tears of joy for the first time.Turning back a few years, in his early twenties, at a late night in Paris during his first visit, he asked his driver to drive through the same tunnel where his mother’s car crashed. Going through it twice made him realize that she was gone forever because in his heart, for many, many years, he didn’t believe her to be dead. Just playing a game of ‘hide and seek’ until she reappears and finds him again! This realization didn’t come easy. It was followed by a long phase of trauma, hurt, depression, anger, panic attacks, jealousy, and hate. But it removed the speck of doubt that even the pictures of the accident hadn’t been able to do. You see, years before this Paris trip, the boy had a...
The antagonistic relationship of Harry and the press
Even if you’re not a ‘Royalie,’ like ‘Swifties,’ (get it?), you would have stumbled upon a headline or two about the infamous Nazi costume worn by Harry. He was 20 when he wore a Nazi costume, his arm etched with a Swastika band – a symbol of a very bad time in history, to a ‘native and colonial’ themed party, also attended by William. In fact, Kate and William had wholeheartedly approved Harry's ridiculous Nazi costume idea . Nevertheless, he was under intense scrutiny after the photo was published in The Sun.
This one was a true story. But some of his other media scandals? Not so much. For instance, . The stories of him being a drug-addict and a cheater during school examinations were forged and leaked to the press. By his OWN family members, no less. Yup, Charles and sometimes Camilla, his second wife, approved damaging press leaks about Harry and Williams. Their spin-doctor had orchestrated a deal with the tabloids of using rumors of Harry’s drug use to deflect attention from Charles’ own struggles. Choose one from the following: “An unfaithful husband” or “A single dad dealing with a drug-addled child.” No brainer, right? Give them an inch, they take a mile, huh?
Similarly, the news report quoting Harry and Meghan’s decision to leave England was something, Harry thinks, came from the palace, too. The article in The Sun talked about them giving up their Sussex titles. This detail was only in a letter he wrote to his father. Very few people had seen this letter. They hadn't even told their best friends about it. Doesn’t take a genius to join those dots!
So, obviously, It’s no surprise that Harry has had an antagonistic relationship with the journalists and photographers. They were the ever-present pesters. He had often gone to great lengths just to avoid them which once included willingly stuffing himself in the coffin-like boot of the car while driving back from a pub just so he could avoid being photographed.
What’s worse is that the British press didn’t pester him alone. The way they treated Meghan, Harry’s wife and the first member of color in the British Monarchy, was far from kind. You’ll know more about it in the next section.
The harassment continues for Harry and people close to him
Meghan was not the first woman in Harry’s life. There have been other girlfriends but they shared the same fate – leaving in the end. Were they cruel for leaving him? Well, imagine finding a tracking device on your car – being stalked everywhere you went. It’s not easy! The ever-watching eyes of the press on Harry meant he had to find a woman who could bear it all – the stalking and the harassment that comes tagging along with the pressure of being a royal. Does a woman like that exist? Well, Harry sincerely hoped for one because he really wanted to start a family – the one he never had but wanted to.
In 2016, at 32, his stars smiled at him when he met Meghan Markle, whom he calls Meg. He describes first seeing her on a friend’s Instagram post: “I’d never seen anyone so beautiful. Why should beauty feel like a punch to the throat?” The two began dating soon. And of course, it was an apocalypse! Her mixed-race background was picked on the most. What if the monarchy had a multiracial child! Oh, the horror! A musing as gossip but extremely hurtful.
Even his brother, William, made things difficult. William “predicted a host of difficulties I could expect if I hooked up with an ‘American actress,’ a phrase he always managed to make sound like ‘convicted felon.’ ” Nevertheless, Harry and Meg tied the knot in 2018 and soon started a family. Their son arrived a year later, followed by a daughter in 2021. Things were ugly deep down when Meghan was pregnant with her first child. They got to a point where Meg had suicidal thoughts, sitting and sobbing on the staircase, where Harry would find her. He comforted her and promised for things to be better, safer and happier.
But how was he going to do it? Will his family help him? Or will someone else step up?
Harry always felt a hollow echo where his family's cheers should have been
“Do as I say, not as I do.” It’s a proverb that highlights the hypocrisy of someone setting different standards for themselves and others. It perfectly suits Charles and Williams. Why, you ask? A private letter of Meghan’s was published by a newspaper. Harry was furious. He wanted to sue the press just like Charles and Williams have done in the past but was talked out of it by the Palace. In the end, he still went ahead and sued the press to defend the honor of his wife. And that’s how we come to the events of 2020! For long-term security and safety of his wife and future family, he decided to give up the royal title and no longer serve the Queen. They planned to leave the UK and move to the US to begin their new life. A family meeting was set up in Buckingham to finalize the details of the exit. Harry and Meghan were presented with five options regarding their future roles - from completely staying to entirely leaving the royal family. Option 3, a compromise allowing them to live elsewhere part-time while retaining security and some duties, was closest to their original proposal. Unfortunately, the royal family had already decided on Option 5 - a full severance with no security. But Harry was desperate to prevent another tragedy like his mother's. He NEEDED the security. So, he made one last passionate pitch: "Look. Please. Meg and I don't care about perks, we care about working, serving—and staying alive." This simple argument seemed to persuade everyone at the meeting. After long harrowing negotiation, they ended up making a deal and were allowed security, for the 12 months of transition. He along with Meghan took a ‘step-back’ from their royal duties, gave up their Sussex titles, no longer served or represented the Queen, and left the UK for good. It proved to be a better decision for him as he has happily settled in California – along with his wife and two beautiful children. However, if he had support from Buckingham, either privately or personally, things wouldn’t have been this bad. What made things worse was realizing that his father and stepmother were an accomplice to most of the insults and hatred he and his wife have received. Be it his alleged drug case or leaking the news about them giving up their Sussex titles. His...
